eMachine Recovery Hangs at Name My Computer

When using the recovery CD for various eMachines (T2080, T2792, T3065) with Windows XP, the computer hangs or freezes at the Name My Computer stage of the process. After spending some time researching the issue, other technicians have noted that the system is stuck trying to configure the video.

The easiest way around this is to shutdown and reboot in VGA mode as follows. If your not sure how to shutdown the computer at this point, just press and hold the power button for about 10 seconds until the computer powers off.

Repair Process

This is the process I typically use with the several eMachines I have worked on recovering.

1) Complete the initial installation and reboot of the system.
2) Power down the system.
3) Power up the system again pressing the F8 key repeatedly.
4) When the boot menu appears, select the VGA option.
5) Continue with the installation configuration.

The system should reboot one more time and then be ready for the remainder of your setup process of installing the Windows XP service packs.

We hope that this information is helpful. Please let us know how this has helped you or if you have additional questions. As always Firestone Technical Resources, Inc. is here to help with your computer support issues - "Providing personal service for your impersonal technology."
