While fixing a client computer I kept having an issue trying to update their Malwarebytes application. Each time the update would attempt to run it would just hang. The system was fairly clean with the exception of one malware application, Babylon Toolbar. The system was also installed with Norton Antivirus, which has not been an issue in the past.
After several attempts to get the update...
- Removed Babylon Toolbar
- Reset Internet Explorer
- Cleaned up Windows Firewall
- Reset TCP/IP stack
I finally rebooted the Windows XP Pro system in Safe mode with Networking enabled. This allowed the update process to complete normally.
This issue has since occured on a second system running Windows XP Home. Even after several checks of both systems, neith has since been able to download the updates with out running in safe mode.
We are big supporters of Malwarebytes as a great clean up tool. However, we often take a minimalistic approach to software application installations, especially when it comes to security. Our recommendation is to uninstall Malwarebytes or any other clean up or repair tool when you are finished - keeping only your antivirus application.
